How did this happen? The year has just spirited by! A lovely spring gave way to June and July construction in the Village, the entire road being removed and the intersection torn up for what seemed like forever. A cooler than usual summer then lead to one of the most spectacular autumns I can remember. And now here we are planning our Holiday windows. Seriously, how did the year trip by so fast?

Yes, the holidays are upon us. We’ll be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 28th and 29th for Thanksgiving, and to get the shop and gallery ready for the Holidays. We’ll reopen on November 30th for Small Business Saturday – come on out and support your favorite local Multnomah Village businesses!

Celebrating 20 Years with Incredible Savings!

Celebrating 20 Years in Multnomah Village!

It all started with our owner’s strong interest in the art world and their desire to be a productive part of it. Deann Holtz and George Cline opened Village Frame & Gallery in 1999, determined to build an organization that met their own expectations for the presentation and preservation of artwork and memorabilia. Together, they established the high standards that still guide the day-to-day operations of the business.

Today, Village Frame & Gallery is owned and operated by long-time client Beth Nichols. The faces may be different, but our commitment to the preservation and presentation of our clients artwork remains unchanged – be it an antique map, an heirloom or needlework, a fine art purchase or a concert poster, or a beloved grandchild’s school project.

Highlighting Local Artists

Local. We define local as the Pacific Northwest, the Portland metro area and hyper-local, right here in Multnomah Village. The area is blessed with so many talented artists, many of whom have gone on to national and international recognition. And many who keep plugging away, with nary a chance to showcase their work. Village Frame and Gallery is pleased to bring talented artists (established and unknown) to our gallery, to Multnomah Village, as our monthly featured artists with a month-long venue to showcase their work. We hold artist receptions on First Fridays, an opportunity for residents and visitors to meet our monthly featured artist and view their work.

Figural Abstractions by Karen Story

Village Frame and Gallery is pleased to present Figural Abstractions, a new show by Karen Story, now in the Gallery through September.

Family Texture by Karen Story

Artist’s Statement

My interest in depicting the human figure began at PNCA where I received my a BFA in 1991. Whether working on an isolated figure or one in interaction with another, this never-ending challenge has been my studio companion.

Having recently begun working with media which are textural, I found that I needed to change my approach. I began to use a palette knife and other tools besides a paintbrush to apply cold wax. Encaustic is also quite textural.

Being influenced by California figure artists of the 60s, I also began using colors not found on the body. This has been a serious challenge for me. I want to keep the form in proportion and anatomically correct while using texture and color abstractly.

This new body of work is the result of this challenge to abstract within the figure. I hope you enjoy viewing it.

Last week to see works by Jeanette Nuxoll!

Differential Frailty, a 2D and 3D interactive show by artist Jeanette Nuxoll ends this Saturday. It’s worth a stop in the shop to experience it! Below, Jeanette explains what all the noise is about.

Differential Panel 1 by Jeanette Nuxoll

Differential Panel #1 and #2 explore an intimate relationship between humans, failure, and technology. Their goal is to reflect on a delicate, replaceable object within a simple system, potentially providing an analogy for the more complex systems of the human body. This kinetic participatory sculpture is made up of several porcelain gears. The viewer turns a hand crank that moves the system of gears. As the gears turn, the delicate sound of clinking porcelain emerges. The fragility of porcelain representing the fragility of human systems explores an expectation of failure. The delicacy and translucency of the unglazed porcelain is offset by the strength of the familiar form of gears. The marriage of fragility and sturdiness opens a dialogue about the potential for deterioration of the system.

In the Gallery – Jeanette Nuxoll; Last Day to Save!

Village Frame and Gallery is pleased to host Differential Frailty, a new and deeply personal show by Jeanette Nuxoll, in the gallery this month. Read more about Jeanette Nuxoll here.

About Differential Frailty

My grandfather owned a factory in Illinois. I would visit as a child and started working there in my early twenties. Working in parts production, the tediousness of repetitive tasks became both hypnotizing and overwhelmingly monotonous. Learning the processes for tool and die making was a welcome break from the rhythm of parts production. The importance of precision in tool and die making highlighted the necessity of parts working together in a system. This sentiment was echoed by my grandfather, who would always say, “Work smarter, not harder”, seizing every moment as a learning opportunity.

In his mid-seventies my grandfather started losing his memory. In a slow deterioration of recall, he would become confused about where he was in a project, or not remember how a certain procedure was executed.  I would work alongside him in an effort to maintain the course on a project, reminding him of processes that he had taught me. I have always thought of my grandfather, and myself, as machines. We are task oriented. We operate in specific processes. We create. Watching the breakdown of his mental and physical functionality, I became progressively more aware of the failures in the mechanical systems in which we had always related.

Differential Frailty specifically addresses the idea that humans, like machines will eventually fail. As we seek to overcome biological and technological failure, humanity is invariably brought closer to the mechanical, allowing transhumanism to emerge as a potential solution to biological obsolescence.

Keeping it in the Village – Sara Starr Medici and First Friday!

Featured Artist – Sara Starr Medici

The road that has lead to where I presently find myself has been full of rich exploration and introductions. Some continue, all contribute to the rich tapestry of life experience both formal and informal that guide and define my work. Along this path I often reflect on hours spent absorbing the beauty and lessons of classic masters during study and life in Italy. The contemporary influence of living in New York City . . . encounters with Andy Warhol and Alice Neel. Fortunate opportunities to have worked as gallery assistant on Madison Ave and studio assistant in Portland. Exhibitions in Italy, New York and Portland, along with the generous support of private collectors all add to the collective experience which continues to inspire creative process and the pursuit and evolution of the work.

My paintings are non-figurative expressions of color and image. I work with acrylic paint with the incorporation of tissue-like paper that mimics the encaustic process, but with a lighter more transparent result. Although color remains the dominant subject, the layering of paint and paper creates illusory depth through texture. Never beginning with a preconceived idea or theme, the challenge is to manipulate the medium while allowing the painting to lead where ultimately it must go.

Sara is co-owner of Casa Vaca Bistro & Bar, right next door to Village Frame and Gallery! We are pleased to feature Sara’s work during the month of February.

Secret Alphabet #2 and #9 by Martha Pfanschmidt

Artist Statement:
As a child I sat at the kitchen table drawing with crayons while my mother cooked dinner. I lost myself in the activity of drawing. It was my first experience of the infinite.

In school I loved making things—scratchboard drawings with black crayon over colored boards, linoleum block Christmas cards, clay figurines glazed in garish colors. At home I continued to draw, and found opportunities to express my creativity in other activities like making gingerbread houses and planting a garden. As an adult I continue to find much joy in the act of creation. Whether I am making a collage or painting I am the alchemist, turning raw materials into beautiful and provocative objects. I am deeply moved by beauty and need it around me for my well-being; it is a pleasure and a necessity.

Martha Pfanschmidt’s work is found in local, national and international collections and two of her encaustic works are on sale now at Village Frame and Gallery. Secret Alphabet #2 and #9 are float mounted and beautifully framed using TruVue Conservation Clear 99% UV protective glazing. Measuring 34 1/2 inches wide by 20 1/2 inches tall, both pieces are offered at $700, more than 25 percent of regular price!

Limited edition prints by Susan Koch

An award-winning watercolorist, Koch tries to evoke a place of familiarity or belonging—a feeling of “being home.” Painting began as a childhood passion for Susan. As far back as she can remember she was intrigued with drawing what she saw. She always knew painting was what she would do with her life and was determined to go to art school.

She studied watercolor at the American Academy of Art in Chicago under the late Irving Shapiro, one of the great watercolor artists of our time. Right out of art school, she found a job as a professional artist—doing graphic design for Yellow Pages ads.

With the exception of a few years after her second daughter was born, Susan has been painting all her adult life. “I have to do it,” she says. “It’s too much a part of me. I’ll never retire because I’ll always be painting. Since then, she has won many awards, including “Best of Show” and “Peoples’ Choice” several years running in the Watercolor Society of Oregon annual shows.

Barnyard with Sheep and Farmhouse on the hill are extraordinary examples of Susan’s intense, almost photographic watercolor renderings. These signed and numbered limited edition prints are conservation framed with TruVue Conservation Clear glazing. Measuring 33 1/2 inches wide by 28 1/2 inches tall, the framed prints are offered at $510, more than 20 percent off regular price!

Village Frame and Gallery has these and many other beautiful pieces on sale now at 20% to 70% off regular prices. The sale runs through the month of January, but stop in soon for the best selection!
