You Don’t See This Everyday!

7:00 am Saturday morning in Multnomah Village

Boy what a sight! The construction crews have been busy since last night, breaking up the surface of SW Capitol Highway between SW 36th and SW 35th Avenues. They continue today digging through the sub-layers down a full 18 inches!

Businesses are OPEN during construction!

Most of the businesses in Multnomah Village are open today. Fat City had a line of folks waiting for their doors to open first thing this morning! Why not? There’s cool stuff going on in the Village – come check it out!

Open During Construction, Save BIG Now!

The Capitol Highway paving project continues this week with significant closures this weekend. In a flyer distributed to Multnomah Village businesses on Tuesday PBOT describes the work:

Coming soon: A smoother, safer and more accessible street for all.

(July 10, 2019) — Paving for the first section of the SW Capitol Highway Paving Project begins on Friday, July 12 at 9 p.m. on SW Capitol Highway from SW 36th Avenue to SW 35th Avenue. The road will reopen on Monday, July 15th at 7 a.m.

This one block section of SW Capitol highway which runs one-way eastward through the heart of Multnomah Village has some of the oldest (100 years) and most deteriorated pavement along the corridor and will require a full street rebuild. As a result, the road will be closed to ALL traffic during the construction period to allow crews to remove approximately 18 inches of damaged pavement to the dirt base and rebuild the street from the bottom up.

Sidewalks will be open along the full length of the project area and business access will be maintained. During construction, motor vehicles and TriMet bus line 44 heading eastbound will be detoured to SW Multnomah Boulevard via SW 40th Avenue and reconnect to SW Capitol Highway at SW 35th Avenue. Westbound traffic will continue straight on SW Troy Street to SW 40th Avenue to reconnect with SW Capitol Highway.

The traveling public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. We ask the public to travel cautiously, observe all lane closures and directions by reader boards and flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible.

Multnomah Village is open for business during construction! Thanks for your patience while we make SW Capitol Highway a smoother, safer and more accessible street for all. Join PBOT to celebrate the project’s completion at Multnomah Days on Saturday, August 17.

Framing Projects Big and Small and Big Savings Now!

We are honored to frame so many special things…original artwork, heirlooms, memories and the like. Sometimes, even in the same week, we frame things that are completely opposite from each other. This very thing happened last week when we were completing a huge unfixed pastel, the feather above. Measuring over six feet wide and almost four feet tall this project presented specific challenges. Not only was it big and float mounted, the unfixed pastel meant that we could not turn the artwork over to mount it!

We completed the beautiful shadowbox presentation with TruVue Optium Museum acrylic because it is lightweight, resists scratching, is anti-static (so important for pastel), provides incredible clarity and most importantly, blocks 99% of UV light.

That very same week, we framed two postcards. The first, a childhood memory, was framed in a heavy traditional frame. We float mounted the postcard on a contrasting background to show off the pretty scalloped edge. The second, a reproduction of the client’s favorite painting, was kept small to fit a nook in their kitchen. To give the diminutive piece presence we added a fabric liner in a pretty green matching the colors in the artwork. Both pieces were framed with TruVue Museum glass.

What projects do you have in your home waiting for the right time to frame? A picture you like, but the framing doesn’t go with your new great room? A piece of street art from a recent vacation? Now is the time to bring them to Village Frame and Gallery!

Save Big with Construction Savings!

Village Frame and Gallery is offering 10 percent off one, or 15 percent off two or more new custom framing projects. We know it’s tough to park in the Village on the best of days and the construction doesn’t help. But here’s a hint…there is frequently empty parking on Capitol Highway right after the lunch rush on weekdays! So gather those projects, save BIG on framing and support the Village!

Scott Cordner, Ceramics Trunk Show and First Friday!

We have a don’t-miss event for First Friday. A new show in the gallery and a tonight-only ceramics trunk show. We look forward to seeing you tonight!

Conservation photographer Scott Cordner returns to the Gallery this month with his show Celebration of the Cascades.

About Scott Cordner

Scott Cordner was destined to become a fine-art landscape photographer. A browse through his portfolio illustrates his passion for the medium and the outdoors.

The pure, unaltered and uncomplicated scenes are captured in the finest light. His exacting prints are made with the best materials that last lifetimes. Hand made hardwood frames from renewable and managed forests are enhanced and finished with environmentally friendly oils and a water-based polyurethane (made from whey, a byproduct of cheese). No detail is overlooked, and it is apparent.

Read more about Scott here. This exhibit is open to the public, free, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, June 7th, and throughout the month during regular business hours.

What’s with the Gallery?

When we purchased Village Frame and Gallery almost five years ago we re-envisioned the space. We wanted a light, open space. A space that showcased the work of local artists, both established and unknown, in a friendly, inviting way. A space where the work of framing art commingled with art and the people that love it.

Welcome to Village Frame and Gallery!

Village Frame and Gallery has occupied the same space in Multnomah Village for almost 20 years. Surprised? You’re not alone. Click here to read our recent post about one such fun interaction. First and foremost, we are a custom framing shop specializing in preserving and displaying your heirlooms and needlework, fine art purchases and concert posters, and your child’s artwork to it’s best effect. But what else do we do?

Highlighting and supporting local artists

Local. We define local as the Pacific Northwest, the Portland metro area and hyper-local, right here in Multnomah Village. The area is blessed with so many talented artists, many of whom have gone on to national and international recognition. And many who keep plugging away, with nary a chance to showcase their work. Village Frame and Gallery is pleased to bring these talented artists (established and unknown) to our gallery, to Multnomah Village, as our monthly featured artists.

Village Frame and Gallery provides local artists with a month-long venue to showcase their work. We hold artist receptions on First Fridays, an opportunity for residents and visitors to Multnomah Village to meet our monthly featured artist and view their work. Hopefully the artwork sells (starving artists, you know), but the main goal is visibility for the artist and their work. For many of our artists it’s a first opportunity to show their body of work – how exciting!

Next time you stroll through the Village take a chance and step inside. Or make a date and come out for First Friday! Browse the shops, grab a bite and meet our monthly featured artist. We will remember

In remembrance and gratitude for those who died in service to their country.

Susan Koch, a Mother’s Day Special and First Friday, Oh My!

May Featured Artist Susan Koch

Our May featured artist, Susan Koch brings her beautifully rendered watercolor paintings to the Gallery this month. You may note, from peering in the shop, that Susan is also the artist that creates the lovely beaded jewelry that graces our windows. It’s no wonder that Susan’s jewelry has a painterly quality about it, the same eye for incredible detail and composition can be found in her paintings. Read more about Susan below.

Painting began for me as a childhood passion. As far back as I can remember, I was intriguedwith drawing what I saw. I was fortunate that my family encouraged me to pursue the artworld. I always knew that painting was what I would do with my life and I was determined to go to art school. I studied life drawing and watercolor at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Illinois. There I was privileged to study watercolor under the late Irving Shapiro, one of the truly great watercolor artists of our time.

Over the past thirty five years my paintings have won many awards, including “Best of Show” and “Peoples’ Choice” several years running in the Watercolor Society of Oregon annual shows. I now devote my energies and attention to painting what I find meaningful, something that speaks to me. Usually it is the light that captures the scene for me. I try to convey to the viewer a place of familiarity or belonging, a feeling of “being home”.

I have lived in many locations across this country, but prefer the Pacific Northwest. It was my choice to relocate here from the midwest. Oregon is such a diverse state. I lived on the Oregon coast for 10 years, and may return someday. I moved to central Oregon with my two cats, Phoebe and Katie, but found myself drawn to the Willamette Valley. I love the romance of the vineyards and the farms, and now live just west of Portland, Oregon.

Mosaics for Mother’s Day and 10% off!

Here in the PNW we start tending to our long dormant gardens early and yearn for warm days to signal that planting season has arrived. Well, the warm weather has finally graced us and the perennials are in. The icing on the (garden) cake is planting colorful annuals in pots to be enjoyed on the porch and patio, close-up!

If you’ve read our posts or walked past our display window you’ve seen the lovely mosaic flower pots by Denise Sirchie. Actually, several of you have popped in to ask about them and made mental notes to hint at Mother’s Day. Well now’s the time! Through Saturday May 11th, all mosaic flower pots are 10 percent off! We have a well curated (art-speak for limited) selection of these beautiful hand-made pots so be sure to stop in soon!

First Friday is right around the corner!

No excuses! The weather is perfect, the shops are ready and nothing could top the end of a work week like walking through the Village on a balmy night! Visit the shops, have dinner, listen to music or have dessert – it’s all good! Village Frame and Gallery is pleased to host an artist’s reception for Susan Koch this Friday starting at 6 pm. Please join us!

Well, Hello. Yes, We’re Here!

It was 6:30 pm on April 1st and I had just finished hanging our April featured artist’s paintings in the gallery – I hadn’t yet locked the door. A woman opened the door and stepped in, politely asking if we were closed. I replied, “Yes we are closed, but I’m here so come on in.” She walked around the shop, looking at the artwork, hand made jewelry and ceramics and then commented, “This shop is so pretty…so clean and bright. It’s new, right?”

Welcome to Village Frame and Gallery!

The scenario above has happened countless times since we purchased Village Frame and Gallery from its original owner almost five years ago. In truth, we’ve been in the same location for almost 20 years – right here in the heart of Multnomah Village! If you’ve walked through the Village no doubt you have walked past our display windows and perhaps peered in. The winter wonderland with white Christmas tree, paintings of the Village by Kaye Synoground, and the mosaic Snow Queen. The cool walnut mid century frames, ceramics and of course the hand-beaded jewelry! But you may not have stepped in. Who are we and what do we do behind those display windows? I thought, since we are celebrating 20 years this summer, perhaps we should introduce ourselves.

What do we do?

The core of Village Frame and Gallery is conservation-grade custom framing. What does that mean? It means we design engaging custom displays for your treasured art, sentimental heirlooms and needlework, posters and kids art. We use only conservation techniques, archival materials and 99% UV filtering glazing to ensure your project lasts a lifetime.

Village Frame and Gallery has one of the largest selections of frame samples and mats in Portland, which honestly can be a bit overwhelming. Our skilled designers will guide you through the selection of materials, taking into consideration your budget and personal aesthetic, presenting you with options for framing your artwork to its best possible effect. During the design process we will assess the condition of your artwork and make recommendations for conservation treatment when necessary.

Who are we?

Next time you stroll through the Village take a chance and step inside. There’s lots to look at and we don’t bite unless provoked! Village Frame and Gallery is located at 7808 SW Capitol Highway, Portland 97219. We look forward to seeing you soon!
